Don Q 151 Puerto Rican Rum

The Don Q 151 rum is bottled at a scorching hot proof and carries "Warning: Flammable!" admonishments on the label. It uses rums aged up to 3 years and said to contain flavors of tobacco, smoke, vanilla, and oak.

Don Q 151 was named Best Over-Proof Rum (an astonishing critical category in itself) in the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (out of a field of 6 overproof rums).

Don Q rums are made in Puerto Rico at the Serralles distillery and began production in 1865. There is a great write-up at the Liquid Muse describing how Serralles began a multi-million dollar investment in 2004 to remake their facilities to employ maximum sustainability. This includes waste C02 going to soda drink manufacturers, waste water being "polished" for irrigation, composting the solid waste products, and recycling the glass. The name Don Q is for Don Quixote, that most famous of all Spanish romantic heroes.
