Tasting Notes Extremely Smooth. Origenes Reserva Don Pancho 30 Year Old shows a dark, burnt orange mahogany color, with the telltale green ring of prolonged aging illuminating the rum’s surface as it meets my tasting glass. Swirling coats the glass with an apparent viscosity. Legs form and run ever so slowly, as if saying “Why hurry now, I’ve waited 30 years to be out to show my stuff!” Then even more legs form; this rum is all about time. Most rums you drink, some you sniff, Origenes you watch. Pry your eyes away, Origenes has more to offer. Namely an exquisitely soft caramel bouquet, followed by deep, layered aromas of vanilla and oak, followed in descending strength by tobacco, praline, pecan, orange peel, sourdough bread and nutmeg. This is a column-distilled masterpiece of delicacy. Yet there’s a mild smell of alcohol, as if to say; “I am rum.” Certainly, Origenes 30 year old is complex, but there’s no aroma shouting above the others; all are integrated in a harmonious balance of scents. Don Pancho
